Fluoride Water: What It Is and How You Can Avoid It

The Origins of Fluoride Water

Fluoride in water goes back a hundred years to a small village town in the mountains of Colorado. For generations, the children born in that village had brown teeth stains, which baffled everyone coming from the outside.

In 1910, after years of investigations done by scientists and dentists, it was revealed that the stains were due to the high levels of fluoride in their drinking water. But while the brown stains were not very pretty to look at, the children all had little to no cavities.

Eventually, experts managed to lower fluoride levels in the water to reduce the teeth staining in newer generations, but teeth still remained resistant to cavities. News spread all over the country, sparking the era of communities adding fluoride to their drinking water.

Fluoride Water in the Modern Era

In recent days, discussions abound regarding the negative effects of fluoride in drinking water on health. With fluoridated water being very highly consumed in many forms across the United States alone, it begs a deeper look at whether it may or may not indeed be posing a health risk.

Studies reveal that there is evidence that high levels of fluoride water can prove toxic. The harmful effects of fluoride links to causing neurotoxicity in adults, affecting learning and memory capabilities, as well as adversely affecting the cognitive development of children.

With at least 70% of public drinking water in the United States being fluoridated today, children are most at risk. Many children are actually being overexposed to fluoride, which can lead to a dental condition called dental fluorosis.

What Is Dental Fluorosis? It is a visible discoloration of tooth enamel. It’s caused by excessive fluoride consumption.

Better Drinking Water Alternatives

Thankfully the choices of safer and better drinking water are plentiful in the United States. Alkalized water and hydrogen water are common and often the drinking water of choice in more households. Some water ionizers, like Tyent ionizers, produce water that’s both alkalized and full of molecular hydrogen so that you get the best of both worlds.

Installing a water ionizer in your home is a suggested idea, as it saves you money in the long run. It is also a more sustainable choice as you waste no plastic bottles when you drink.

Tyent ionizers, for example, have a highly efficient filtration system that filters over 200 contaminants. Tyent pre-filters, on the same note, remove high traces of fluoride from water.

Tyent water is also more efficient at hydrating your body because the hydrogen molecules in them are easier for cells to absorb.

The Dangers of Plastic

Did you know that up to 67 million plastic drinking water bottles are thrown away every day around the world? These plastic bottles are also non-biodegradable, meaning they simply pile up in waste dumps, or can even be ingested by sea creatures once they find their way into the sea.

Drinking from plastic bottles can also result in the following issues in the long run:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Fertility issues
  • Premature puberty
  • Cancer
  • Developmental, learning, and behavioral stalls

This is because plastic water bottles can contain flame retardant chemicals, phthalates, and BPA (bisphenol A).

What Are Phthalates? These are chemicals that help with softening and increasing the flexibility of plastic products.

What Is Bisphenol A? This is a synthetic compound used in the making of epoxy. It also has the capability of imitating the body’s hormones, especially estrogen, which can interfere and even disrupt hormone production.

Fluoride may be a primary ingredient in toothpaste and keeping our teeth from getting cavities, but too much of a good thing can also be bad for you. By limiting our intake of fluoridated water, or by switching to healthier alternatives like premium filtered ionized or alkaline water, we can still reap the benefits of water without suffering any long term side effects.

  1. Your summarization about high fluoride research is grossly misrepresented. That study was conducted in a different country and measured acute fluoride toxicity after constant exposure to water, quote, “significantly” above 1mg/L which is far beyond the now standard 0.7mg/L of fluoride in public drinking water. Anything at all can be toxic if it is present in toxic quantities. Fluoride, like many minerals, has a threshold response which means that it is only dangerous after a certain quantity. Not to mention the studies analyzed are more than 15 years out of date. 1. Hi, Allie. Thank you so much for pointing this out.

What we want to draw attention to instead is the fact that there is a healthier option for drinking water both within and outside the home, an option that doesn’t pose any risks to your health but instead gives you multiple benefits. Our alkaline water is able to provide essential minerals that a lot of these common water options lack.

    1. Hi, Ann. Thank you for letting us know. However, we still don’t recommend the drinking of bottled water, as it’s more wasteful in the long term, and has fewer minerals and benefits than alkaline water.

  2. Thank you for the tips! We are looking for a good business, and I think having a water refilling station is a good one. I just need to improve my knowledge in some aspects.
